Music of Your Dreams:
It's no question that the perfect soundtrack is a major part of drawing the player into the game. In this respect, Nights delivers flawlessly. The dream music is fun, the nightmare music is exciting, and the game's theme, "Dreams Dreams," is much appreciated after leading Claris and Elliot to victory and bringing them closer together.
Since the level music changes with your progress, none of it is stored as separate audio tracks on the disc. All other tracks, however, are readily accessible and just waiting to be heard on your CD player, laser disk player, CD-ROM drive, DVD player/drive (some day), Saturn, or (gasp!) PlayStation. Here is a quick list of what's available:
-
Tracks 1-2: Data Tracks. If given the option, don't play 'em! This is damaging to your player as well as grating on your ears. If you do play them accidentally, don't worry just yet; there's a good chance your player still works fine (if they didn't play too long) and this is of no harm to the Nights disc.
-
Tracks 3-7: These tracks are short tunes used often throughout the game. You should recognize the "Night Over" music, as well as other commonplace entries.
-
Tracks 8-16: You're in for a real treat here: these are all the Nightmaren themes! They are in the same order that the bosses appear in a normal game, though tracks eleven and twelve are different versions of a similar tune, and tracks fifteen and sixteen are the two parts of Wizeman's theme.
-
Track 17: Menu music. Rather repetitive, but very relaxing. The sounds of children in the background is a nice touch.
-
Track 18-20: These are used as background music while scores are displayed after a dream is completed.
-
Track 21: "Dreams, Dreams," Nights' title theme, and played while the credits roll at the end. A duet between Elliot and Claris, this song really makes the story come alive. Even if you never manage to complete the game, you should at least listen to this track. It's enjoyable no matter what your musical preference.
Having game music easily accessible like this is a great advantage to CD's. Thanks to this format, you can enjoy Nights even when you have "more important" things to do.
