News from DevCon 96'

AM2 is currently working on a hot new driving game that blows away anything they've made (according to Yu Suzuki).
The newest Sega Graphics Library, version 2.0a, was distributed to all the developers at the Sega DevCon 96'. Virtual On, which was developed using this new SGL 2.0a in two weeks, was playable, and running at 708X480 resolution at 60 frames per second, and there were not any polygon reduction. The new SGL also supports the Stunner, so now developers can easily make light gun compatible software. The new SGL, still doesn't take advantage of the Saturn's DSP, but Sega will be adding that to their next version.

Tomb Raiders Information

Core's newest Saturn title Tomb Raiders is really starting to take shape. The games movement scheme is similar to Resident Evil for the Playstation. Even Though the game is still in the early stages of development, Tomb Raiders already gives Resident Evil a run for it's money in the graphics department. The background graphics are extremely detailed. Many walls are made of stone, which looks realistic, and have hieroglyphics written on them. Enemies include dogs/ wolves, bears, thieves, and robots (from Atlantis). In the game you play a character named Laura Cruz. She has the ability to run, jump, hang on ledges, and much more (like the ability to shoot in two directions at once!). Tomb Raiders is currently 30-40% complete and should be available 3rd quarter '96.

Import "White" Saturns available in US

The redisigned "white" Saturns are being sold in the US by importers at a price lower than the $250 domestic Saturns. The new Saturns are more rounded, white, and have integrated all of the chips on one ASIC. These moves have allowed Sega to produce the units more cheaply and have passed the savings on to the consumer. While currently widely available in Japan, the new design isn't slated to be released in the US for several months. They are selling for $235 at NCS.
