SEGA/3DFX CONSOLE GAMING SYSTEM?

PC Gamer reported yesterday that Graphic chipset-maker 3Dfx filed for an initial public offering on Thursday, revealing a surprising twist in the company's future. It seems Japanese console maker Sega is expected to invest heavily in 3Dfx, acquiring 700,000 of the 4.2 million shares that 3Dfx is offering.

Furthermore, documents filed with the Security and Exchange Commission confirm that 3Dfx is using their Voodoo Graphics architecture to develop a Sega/3Dfx chipset for a new Sega game console. According to the filing, this agreement grants Sega the exclusive right to the architecture for three years, to be used solely for use in home game consoles.

In the filing, 3Dfx cautions that this new console system may never be released. However, Sega has been known to be working on a new console system, code-named "Black Belt", in conjunction with Microsoft and others.

The new system is expected to play a major role in 3Dfx's future. According to the SEC filing, "the timely development of the Sega/3Dfx Chipset by the Company and the successful introduction and sale of the new Sega game console will be critical factors affecting the Company's future business, financial condition, and results of operations." In other words, the success or failure of the new Sega console is of critical importance to 3Dfx.

NETLINK GAMES ON THE WAY

As reported by NextGen Online, Sega has distributed to 3rd party developers the latest tools for implementing NetLink support for any game. According to the Sega spokesperson, "By investing two to three weeks of development time, nearly any title should easily be able to support the NetLink."

On another note, Sega has made it clear that it doesn't have any plans for a service for NetLink owners to set up games, but feel that gamers will be able to meet people on IRC to find people to play. IMPORT SATURN NEWS UPDATE

The Black Belt is a hot title discussed widely in the US, but what does SOJ say about the Black Belt? "We don't deny that there is a new machine in the future", from one insider at SOJ, "But SEGA is an entertainment enterprise, so we will keep on developing new hardware whether for the arcade or home console. We truely discussed and exchanged ideas with many other related companies which are interested in this field. But currently, we haven't made up our mind. Besides, technology boosts so fast that today's up-to-date hardware technology may be out-of-date in '98. "

In other import news, Thunder Force 5 is scheduled to be released on 7/4 in Japan.

And, there is a new simulation RPG developed together by SEGA and KOEI, titled "Soldners Child".

MEGA MAN 8 GENERATING MEGA SALES

Capcom announced that in its first weekend of sales, Mega Man 8 for the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn generated "Mega Sales." Both Electronics Boutique and Babbages Etc. sold over 55% of their inventory within the first three days of sales. This made Mega Man 8 one of the top selling 32-bit games in the month of March. Electronics Boutique also reports they sold over 75% of their inventory after ten days of sales. Mega Man 8 is currently number eight and climbing on Electronic Boutique's top ten list.

"Mega Man is one of Capcom's longest running and most popular action heroes and this marks the first time that a Mega Man game has entered the 32-bit market," said Bill Gardner, president of Capcom Entertainment. "The response that we've gotten from the retailers was so overwhelming that we had to allocate product based on the fact that our orders were far greater than anticipated. Due to the success of Mega Man 8, we are currently considering a second build."

"The response that we've had for Mega Man 8 from consumers has been overwhelmingly positive," said Pete Roithmayr, director/senior buyer for Electronics Boutique. "We are elated to have sold over three quarters of our inventory in such a short time, so much that we have already reordered Mega Man 8 twice. Electronics Boutique has been buying Mega Man games for years. He's a popular character with a proven success rate who appeals to a wide range of our customers."

"We are extremely happy about the response for Mega Man 8," added Doreen Erickson, merchandise manager for Babbages Etc. "At this time, almost all of our stores have completely sold out and we are currently awaiting a new shipment. Mega Man is a well-known character who historically has sold very well for us. I think the popularity of this title is based on the fact that there is not a lot of 32-bit software for kids. Mega Man 8 is a title that crosses all age barriers and appeals to both parents and kids alike."

GAMEWORKS EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

Since opening its doors under 30 days ago, GameWorks is already becoming one of Seattle's hottest late night hangouts. Its popularity has resulted in GameWorks premier location announcing today extended hours for each day of the week. New hours, effective immediately, will keep GameWorks doors open Monday-Thursday until 12:30 a.m., Friday and Saturday until 1:30 a.m., and Sunday until 11:00 p.m.

"On opening day we had 12,500 people enjoy GameWorks. And since March 16, we have averaged 50,000 visitors per week," said Wayne Rankin, general manager of GameWorks Seattle. "The crowds have been continuous, and everyone's having a great time."

"Not only are people having fun, but GameWorks is a perfect alternative -- and often a supplement -- to bar hopping and clubbing. It's clear that extending our hours will make for an even more enjoyable outing," said Rankin.

After 8 p.m., only guests over 18 years old will be admitted into the GameWorks nightclub.

GameWorks will open their second location in Las Vegas later this month, followed by Ontario, Calif.; Dallas; Tempe, Ariz.; and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, by year's end.

KONAMI'S FUTURE WITH THE SATURN

I'm sure that the majority of you have been to Saturnworld recently. The news section on April 5th under the heading 'Konami down but not out' explains the situation in greater detail. But here is a brief summary: Konami actually wants to hear from you. They want input as to what games you want to see. Please take the time to send individual emails to cmunoz@konami.com with the subject as 'Saturn Requests'. Flood these guys with email so they don't totally kill off support for our system. We have a 1.6 million installed user base, that's more than enough owners to justify the production of games. Here are some games that I'd personally like to see:

Suikoden Vandal Hearts Policenauts Snatcher Metal Gear Castlevania X

You can add to or subtract from this list but please email these guys. Konami may very well lose their status as my favorite game developer if they don't clean up their act.

Thanks

Captain Picard

SEGA-BANDAI MERGER MAY EXPERIENCE A DELAY

Bandai said the company's planned merger with Sega Enterprises Ltd may not be completed by October 1 as scheduled. A company spokeswoman on Wednesday confirmed a comment by Bandai president Makoto Yamashina in a recent interview with the Japanese business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun, in which he indicated the merger could fall behind schedule.

"It is not that we are expecting the merger to be delayed, but rules on how to operate the new company are being hammered out very carefully," the spokeswoman said. A spokesman for Sega said his company did not expect any delays in the merger, although he said that the two companies had an enormous number of items to work out before it was completed. "We must prepare to become a truly unified company in order to survive the rapid changes in our industry," he said.

The Bandai spokeswoman said top executives from Bandai, Sega and CSK Corp, which is to hold 20 percent in the new company, have been discussing various matters including the assignment of responsibilities for boosting the firms' sagging profitability.

Analysts have said that, after January's announcement of the merger plan, one of the biggest hurdles facing the two companies was the extreme contrast in their corporate cultures. "While Sega was owned by a foreign company, Bandai is a firm of long standing in Japan. It will not be easy to harmonise those companies' considerably different cultures," said Mitsuko Morita, analyst at Morgan Stanley Japan Ltd.

Toy maker Bandai and game-machine manufacturer Sega said in January they would merge on October 1 to build what they said would be a "formidable force" in the media entertainment business. Sega's president Hayao Nakayama said at that time that the new company would have annual sales of 600 billion yen.
