SEGA REFUSES TO COMMENT ON MICROSOFT LINK
Sega Enterprises Ltd., a major Japanese video game maker, refused Monday to comment on a
report it is planning to develop a higher-powered video game machine with Microsoft Corp.
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said in its Sunday editions that Sega plans to develop a 128-bit home-use video game
machine through a venture with Microsoft. The two companies will officially sign an agreement as early as October, the
report said.
A Sega spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the company has been in talks with Microsoft on
developing products, but said the types of products the two will develop are yet to be finalized.
A spokesman in Microsoft's Tokyo office said Microsoft is now discussing selling ``Widows CE,'' an operating system
software for use in personal computers, to the Japanese maker.
But Microsoft has not made a decision on whether it will form any sort of business link with Sega, said the Microsoft
spokesman, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.
The new video game machine would be the most powerful in the industry, surpassing Sega's 32-bit model and rivals
such as a 64-bit machine made by Nintendo Co.

MORE FROM THE TOKYO GAME SHOW
Enix of Japan had numerous PlayStation titles, but one of their most interesting titles on display
was a video demo of Madou Monogatari, and RPG for the Sega Saturn that stars Aruru from Puyo Puyo.
Also shown at the TGS was Warrz, which is an RPG that will utilize the Sega Saturn Modem for Network
play. Warzz lets you travel around and also interact with other players that are in the world at the
same time that you are in. While it may not be an Ultima Online, it should be a welcome site for
Saturn NetLink owners in Japan.
Tecmo's Dead or Alive apparently is looking very good and should be ready for its October 9th
release date in Japan.
Sega's Sonic R is coming along smoothly as the version at TGS is a lot better looking and features
more tracks than the very incomplete version that was shown at E3.Another Sega Saturn racer, Sega
Touring Car Championship, is also coming along greatly as it looks like it will be the fastest moving
racing game for the Sega Saturn and controls perfectly with Sega's Analog Control Pad. Only time will
tell if it can surpass such titles as Daytona and Sega Rally in the all-important gameplay department.
Also on display in Sega's booth was All Japan Pro Wrestling featuring Virtua, the game is still extremely
early but looks really promising. For some pics of All Japan Pro Wrestling featuring Virtua, head over
to the Previews section.
Hudson announced a second Bomberman for the Sega Saturn. This next Saturn Bomberman game will be
a 3D game much like the Bomberman 64 for the Nintendo 64. It will take gameplay to the next level
as you will be able to battle it out on different planes. If it can keep the same terrific gameplay
of Saturn Bomberman, it could be a huge title for Saturn owners.
In some surprising news, Kenji Eno announced that D2 will be making its way to the Sega Saturn. D2 was
supposed to be one of the very first titles for the Matsushita M2.
X-Men vs Street Fighter looks like it will be a fantastic port to the Sega Saturn thanks to the 4 MB RAM
cart. The loading times, frame rate and animation appears to be much better than the Saturn version of
Marvel Super Heroes.

TOKYO GAME SHOW SOFTWARE NEWS
Yuji Naka of Sonic Team announced his team's new project, "Burning Rangers".Naka stated that he wanted
to make a game different than Sonic or NiGHTS to show that they were capable of much more. Naoto Oshima,
the chief designer, wanted to create a game that reflected the heroic feel of anime characters, where the
characters are normal but have worked hard to achieve their talents. In an effort to make it easy to
control you 3D player on a 2D screen and to help reduce the frustration common with 3D action games,
automatic features such as an autojump and navigation feature have been added. (SOURCE: teleparc GAME geisen)
Axela had Maria, a psycho-adventure game where the player is a shrink trying to cure Maria, who has multiple
personalities. It has sharp graphics and a very original storyline and is set for a December release in
Japan.
Asmik had Lupin the 3rd for the Saturn. Lupin is a 3D polygon game that takes place in a pyramid, it's set
for a winter '97 release in Japan.
Atlus had three titles for the Sega Saturn. They were Devil Summoner Soul Hackers, Princess Crown and
Ronde. Devil Summoner Soul Hackers is the next in the Devil Summoner series and is set for a November
release in Japan. Princess Crown is an action RPG that features fighting game style action and a great
story. And Ronde is the newest version of Makai Tensei RPG that is scheduled for an October release.
Pics of Princess Crown and Ronde will be posted in the RPG section soon.
Imagineer had Desire for the Saturn, it is an adventure game where you must discover the mysteries of a secret
research lab named Desire. Desire should be released soon for the Saturn in Japan.
ESP had a strong showing for the Saturn with about five different games on display. The games included:
Grandia, Silhouette Mirage, Baroque, Lunar Magic School and Lunar Eternal Blue. Grandia is the great looking
RPG that Saturn owners have been anxiously awaiting, which is currently set for a December 1997 release in Japan.
Silhouette Mirage is the 2D action game that is being developed by Treasure, the company known for Guardian
Heroes, Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, and a TON of other great games).Silhouette Mirage should be released
soon in Japan. Baroque is an action RPG that is set for a Winter '97 release in Japan. Lunar Magic School
is a side story to the Luna series loosely based on the Game Gear title of the same name, it's set for a
November release in Japan. And also from ESP, Lunar 2 Eternal Blue is the remix Saturn version of the Sega
CD classic.
Konami had several Saturn games on display including that highly anticipated Dracula X and Genso Suikoden.
Both games should have new features not in their PlayStation counterparts, and since they're from Konami of
Japan, you know the changes will be good.
As you would expect, Sega had a lot of games on display, but the games that got the most attention were Burning
Rangers, Shining Force III and Sakura Taisen 2.
The show has lacked any huge news announcements, i.e no Dural, no VF3, etc, but it was a very strong
showing for the Sega Saturn. Despite only having about 25% of the games in total compared to the close to
50% for the PlayStation, the Saturn clearly had the most exciting titles with the likes of Shining Force 3,
Burning Rangers, Grandia, Sakura Taisen 2, plus the games from Konami and Capcom. Does this sound like a
dead system to you?
