Alien Trilogy
I recently purchased Alien Trilogy for the Saturn, and have two words to describe it: "IT ROCKS". The graphics are the best I've seen for a first person shooter on the Saturn. After that hideous game Robotica, I actually had doubts that the Saturn could handle a good Doom clone. AT put those fears to rest. I realize that this game was released on the Playstation some time ago, but I haven't played it so I can't compare the two. The sound is movie quality, and sounds the best on a surround system. I personally think AT has the best shotgun sound effect I've ever heard. It could have used a little more death and fighting sounds for the aliens, but what's there is high quality. The graphics are top notch. It really captures the atmosphere of the movies. Dark colours and lots of blacks and greens give it a creepy feeling. The animation on some of the creatures, most noticeably the synthetics, could use some work. But the aliens themselves are animated well. Gameplay is good, but there are a few minor problems. Hit tracking is a little bit off, and manuevering through some of the hallways tends to be a little bit difficult. That old "sticky wall" syndrome associated with most doom clones is back with a vengeance. Overall, well done. There's a pretty good balance to the difficulty settings, and the length is there, (30 levels). If you've been waiting for a good first person game for the Saturn, wait no more. Alien Trilogy is finally here, and I feel it was worth the wait. Now if we could just get that version of Doom...
