Alien Trilogy

Review by: John Lipparelli

If there is one word to describe Aliens Trilogy, the word would have to be "spooky." The mixture of music, dark setting, and aliens could disturb anybody. This isn't Doom, Aliens have been established as scary creatures that are very fast and harmful to one's health.

I enjoyed the animation at the beginning and before each mission. That was one of the reasons why I continued to play because the voices of the actual actors were being used. (Kind of like the X-Men fighting game...)

Control, for the most part was decent. I felt that Ripley was moving a tad slow, especially when trying to strafe. But the control was fast enough to whip the woman around and start firing. On the other hand, visuals of the game seemed too dark. This was rather annoying because it was hard to see in the game and I had to always turn my TV to bright.

Music and choice of weapons were great, plus the time it took to cycle through weapons. The music was extreme eerie. The music and darkness made me paranoid at night, even Probe's music bothered me. This is not a game one should be playing at 3:30 am when there's a mega rain storm outside with lightening and high velocity winds.

The levels are fairly fast paced and if you get enough items or kill enough Aliens, you get the bonus levels. I played all versions of the game (easy,hard,mega-hard, etc...) and found that the levels leading to the final boss were harder than the boss! That Queen doesn't exactly move like a Cheetah and it's easy to blow her away. But then again, maybe it's worth it because you will have had your share of blowing away Aliens earlier.

One thing I didn't understand in the game was the role of the smart-gun. The pulse rifle was my favorite weapon along with the grenade launcher and then the shotgun. The game has enough strategy that to save ammo, you need to change weapons. Don't bother to waste shotgun shells on the face-huggers when you can instead shoot them with the .45. Basic stuff, but fun.

Why this is a cool shooter is the fact that it's based off 3 movies. We all have wanted a chance to blow those big, nasty Aliens ourselves and we all know that we're hell of a lot smarter than any of the the first movie's crew. I like the translation from trilogy to this format, I think they did a good job.
