Burning Rangers
After being teased by every Saturn site with those amazing pictures, the long wait is finally over and I know that just about every Saturn owner would like to know how this one turned out. Well, I'm sorry but this game is just too frickin' wicked! You take the role of a futuristic fire fighter who must venture out into burning buildings to save those who are trapped inside. However, in order to safely teleport each survivor, you must have with you a minimum amount of crystals which can be obtained throughout the levels. If you don’t have enough then you cannot rescue the people and your final grade after level completion will be lower (much like Nights). The graphics you say? Very impressive at the least. The lighting is something to be seen ( when your character goes into a dark area with the head lamps on) and the fires are very nice (aside from slight pixilixation). However there is some polygon break-up throughout which is almost assumed on the Saturn and the graphics are far from high res. The frame rate could also be better, but it’s still well enough to know what you’re doing. I'm currently working through mission two in which you must swim through water and it appears somewhat similar to Tomb Raider's water levels. The sound complements the action perfectly, from the sound of the flames and explosions to your character's every footstep. Sound is vital in this game as it always alerts you of explosions which occur frequently throughout the levels. The music is very subtle throughout the game when there is any at all, and the theme song is good. The songs have some vocals and/or rapping as well. The intro. is just like watching a Japanese cartoon and it’s pretty cool. The control is what you'd expect from a Sonic Team game. Easy to get started and quite basic. Jump, Action, View, Navi and Camera Angle buttons are at your disposal. The analog control makes things better as usual, however sometimes I find it hard to control my character when the action gets hot and the camera angles change up. But I assume that it just takes a bit of practice to get used to it. One problem though is the amount of Japanese content in this game. BR reminds me very much of Japanese anime and the story is heavily integrated into the action. There's talking just about everywhere: before you start, when you rescue people, and even when you're just simply walking (you’re team is constantly in contact with you). This is an obvious reason as to why the domestic version of BR is going to be released much later. If you want to be into the story line, you'd probably want to wait for the domestic release, but personally the action is more than enough for me. I could go on and on writing about this game, but honestly I'd just rather play it. I'm usually very picky when it comes to games. I thought that Nights was okay, and Tomb Raider was just the same. However this game pulled me right in from the start. Get it and you won't be disappointed!
