Burning Rangers

Review by: JL

Go! Go! Burning Rangers! Go! Burning Rangers reminds me very much of Power Rangers and Robotech. Burning Rangers comes from the Sonic Team who made the Sonic games and Nights! BR takes place in the future where fire trucks are gone and firefighting has become very hightech and lightweight. You play as either Shou or Tillis at first. Each BR has his/her own reason for joining the team. BR also introduces voice navigation so you won't get lost.

GRAPHICS:
The graphics are a mixed bag. Name almost any 3-D effect and it is in here. Name almost any graphics problem and it is in here. First the positive the Sonic Team has once again proved they have mastered the Saturn. They just push it the Saturn to the limits. It has gourad shading, lightsourcing, and realistic looking flames. Now the bad part the graphics glitch, tear, and pop-up up. Even if you don't move your character the screen glitches. Even though there are some graphic problems the positive side burns through!

SOUND/MUSIC:
Most of the voice acting and actors are corny. Chris puts no feeling into it, Shou sounds like a 12 year old, Tillis is annoying, and the victims have the worst lines and are annoying. The two voice actors who comes to the rescue? Big Landman and Reed/Lead Phoenix. The voices match perfectly. Big sounds like a big tough guy and Lead/Reed sounds like a show-off and a jerk. Even though the stages are maze-like you won't get lost in them with the voice navagation. The sound is very distinct. You can tell the difference between a normal shot and a charge-shot. The bosses even shout in pain when you hit them.

The music is like Sonic R, not as super happy though. Its annoying but if you listen to it you WILL like it. The music is very rap and r&b oriented. The are some techno tracks also. When you actually play the game as Shou or Tillis there is no music except when you fight the bosses.

CONTROL/GAMEPLAY:
The control is done very well and the only time it fails is in zero-gravity and in the water. It is very frustrating moving in zero-g and difficult to mover in water due to water currents. The last time it would fail like in any other 3-D platformer is in jumping. Other than those things control is flawless. In BR you can perform many aerial moves which are very easy and don't need a lot of coordination to pull off.

Gameplay is just like Nights some will like it, love it, or hate it. In BR things are so vastly different you go on a training mission before you go on the mission. On each mission your objective is the same: rescue victims and put out fires. Many will be bored because after a while you will become very bored. Your shield is powered by crystals sort of like in Sonic but it also powers your tranporter. To save a victim it requires aleast 5 crystals. You have two type of shots: normal and charge.

After beating BR you will now be able to input passwords. This allows you to play as other characters and play same missions over to perfect them. Also, BR has a even shorter length than Nights. While in Nights each character had their own levels Shou and Tillis have the same. Finally everytime you play the number and which of victims, colors of doors, how the level has been constructed will change sometimes drastacially other times slighty.

REPLAY:
Take everything in consideration BR is an aquired taste not all will like this game. BR is also very, very short. Even with all that said I still play and enjoy it. For most will only play this game once or twice and never play it again.

***To get the sub-game you have to rescue Neal Belmondo in stage-3 twice. In his 2nd e-mail you'll find he has sent it.
