Creature Shock

Review by: Nitemare

Summary:

I had been wanting to try out this game. I finally found it for $15 in some old video game store. It had an interesting title, and I haven't heard much about it. I had gotten the computer game, but my computer wasn't fast enough to try it out. So, i found it on the Saturn..

Playability: 5/10

It's not that great. In the first episode, you have to fly to the world, or wherever. On your way, you encounter asteroids, alien ships, and power ups. You can't see where your laser is firing. Your ship looks like the Sega 3d controller ;)

on the rest of the episodes, you explore the world, or ship, or whatever. you can encounter junctions, corridors, doors, etc. the movement is ok.. it gives an eerie feeling because you have no idea when a monster might pop up.

the control isn't that great. depending on where you are, you can have a movement or weapon pointer. the weapon pointer is just a cross hair that moves easily(similar to the one in Virtua cop). the movement pointer is simple. move it to one side of the screen, you go that way. the monsters can only be killed one way, hitting their "soft" spot. it is highlighted in purple or green when the monster attacks. if you shoot anywhere else, it wont die.. and the monster covers it up sometimes, so you just stand their getting killed.

Replay value: 7/10

Unless you like killing enemies over and over.. it isn't great at all either. you can come up on monsters that can kill you instantly.. and once you die, you have to start all over again and kill the same monsters.

Sound: 8/10

sound is great! the music track is kind techno/electronic. the sound effects are ok. the monsters give out a good sound too.

Graphics: 7/10

The monsters are raytraced, which makes it really cool. the movies are slightly fuzzy, and there is a slight delay between each scene. kind of like resident evil, cept not as slow. the background, walls, and everything else are very fuzzy and pixily once the monsters get upclose, you can really see the great raytracing. there are movies in between some of the gameplay.. which is pretty cool.

Overall: 7/10

Some people hate this game, but it seems alright to me. If they had shined up the walls and added some more detail, it would've been 9/10. this is a must-rent. it will keep you entertained for awhile. i bought it, just because its another game for a cheap price ;) it also could've been better if you could play with 2 people.
