Darklight Conflict Review by: Mitch Dussault Let's start this review with one word: HARD! On back of box: {Abducted from your fighter by an alien race, you're in the ultimate battle. The Reptons and Ovons are locked in a deadly duel for supremacy, and you're the Repton's secret weapon. You've been genetically altered, making you one with our Repton craft. Now you must wage war against the Ovons while trying to find a way home. When an Earth warrior takes on Heaven's best, the outcome can only be...Hellish.} This game is unbelievably hard. What it is, is a first-person shooter much like Origin's "Wing Commander" series and Lucas Arts' X-Wing and Tie Fighter games. This game has some of the best 3-D polygonal rendering I've seen since NiGHTS. It also has real-time light sourcing which is an extremely convincing effect to projectiles and explosions. The real-time lens flaring effect hyped on the box is nothing more than a few circles on the screen based on where the star for that particular stage is (like on westerns where the camera is pointed at the sun and the circles appear). If you did well with the combat sequences in X-Wing, prepare to die, this game's is very similar, but 10 times harder! The relentless onslaught of enemy fire makes for a very low survival rate based more on luck than actual strategy. Although the 3-D control pad can be utilized, the positioning of the buttons don't allow you to charge your shields and fire at the same time, unless your hands can contort into unearthly forms... And the customize control pad option only has 4 PRE-SETS, none all too intuitive. Another disappointment is the save feature. There is none! It's based on passwords, making joining an old game more difficult than it needs to be. When you die, unless you pause and restart the level quickly, it reloads the introduction and you have to WAIT and reload the stage again! Auuugghh! Scores based on a 1-10 rating. 10 being the best.
