Dynamite Deka

Review by: Bill Schimel

After completing Dynamite Deka several times its safe to say that this is the best game of its kind. If you ever played Streets of Rage or Alien Storm on the Genesis, this seems to be based on that engine. It never gets boring and just plain amazes me. How did the Saturn get the power to handle six characters at almost VF2 quality, with complex backgrounds, weapons, great music, and awesome play mechanics at the same time?

Graphics- 3D polygon graphics. Lots of colorful enemies and backgrounds ranging from a guy using the bathroom in a stall with toilet paper rolls flying everywhere as thugs pick up guns and blast everywhere to 5 firemen in yellow suits hacking at you with axes while a fire truck in the back ground sprays water across the stage that you must dodge. Smooth animation (we are spoiled by 60 fps fighters) and great character and stage design.

Music/ Sound Effects: Movie style music that fits the scenes well. The punches and crunches sound realistic and the boom of the anti tank gun is great!

Control: Very responsive with 3 buttons. Punch, kick and jump. It takes a while to get used to the 3D effect but once you do.... its great!

Play Mechanics: This is the games main point. You can preform VF style button tapping combos with VF style special moves. Then you can walk up to your opponent and grap them. From here button taps will get you anything from a double punch and a suplex to a Wolf spinning hurl to throwing them on the ground and beating them in the face. Your enemies can also do most of this stuff as well. And then you have the..... weapons! Broken bottles, knifes, poles, brooms, robot parts, pipes, pepper cans, mace, hairspray and a lighter, and a huge assortment of guns ranging from a small handgun to a machine gun to a rocket launcher. Its sooo much fun beating up the bad guys. Very addictive.

Replay Value: With only 5 short stages you might get bored... but when you can pick up an anti tank gun and shoot a guy in his underwear only and blast him across the room to smack into a wall on the other side... I don't think you'll get bored. I played through the whole game 3 times in a row before I peeled myself away to write this.

Overall: Great fun! The two player mode is a blast. This is the best side scrolling fighter EVER! A great addition to the sega library and a must have for every fighting fan
