Review by Rob van Alstyne Let me start off by saying that FIFA soccer '96 is the best sports game (excluding racers) available for the saturn. Its smooth control, realism, and new virtual stadium technology put it over the top and make it the current king of video game soccer. The control is frustrating at first (tapping B does a back tap pass, pushing B passes forward) but one quickly come to appreciate its depth. Headers, bicycles, one timers, are all possible and give the game a feelimg of authenticity that no other can rival. Helping this authenticity even more is that FIFA '96 is the first game to have real european and international club rosters. Braazil is led by Romario and Bebeto just like in real life, and Lalas leads the defense for the US team. This adds tremendously to the game if one is a real soccer fan. And not only do the players have real names and jersey numbers they have an anouncer too. A real british soccer anouncer gives the call on every play and doesn't just scream goal. Here is just the sample of his commentary (pass from Bebeto to Romario, nice handle by Romario, shoots, hits the post, confident goalkeeping, Bebeto shoots, its in the back of the net!) took about added excitement the crowd too is authentic it sounds as if it were recorded at the world cup. All in all a superb effort by electronic arts. Look for MLS (Major League Soccer) rosters in the upcoming '97 edition. Graphics:8/10 The players all look the same but thats only a minor complaint, myriad camera angles all useful in gameplay and virtual stadium technology make it a winner in this department! (Be sure to watch the celebrations after a goal!) Sound:10/10 Its like your on the field. Great anouncer! Gameplay/Control:10/10 Real rosters and real moves can't be beat. Final: 10/10 Everything you could imagine in a soccer game is here. (Speed bursts, dribble jukes, and more are at your disposal In closing hopefully EA will do with its other sports titles what its done with FIFA on the saturn! |
