Guardian Heroes

Review by Tham Chern Yih

Guardian Heroes is best described as a side-scrolling hack-em up . The gameplay is exactly the same as Treasure's Yu-Yu Hakusho for the megadrive which is very good . The game features multiple storylines which will decide the ending and that adds up to its replay value. However, there is a minor flaw with this game as the characters are not balanced with the most powerful being the hero, Harn . It would be very difficult to finish the game with the hardest setting using the other characters especially the female mage . A versus mode is also included where you will be able to use the enemies after defeating them ( there are over thirty of them !) . The best thing about it is that six players can join in . Here are my scores for the game .

Graphics 10/10 Great use of colour and lots of parallax . The sprites are very detailed and the backgrounds are outstanding . Slowdown is very minimal and there is hardly any flickering even when the screen is full of baddies . We won't be seeing this type of graphics on the Playstation .Did I mention the great intro sequence ?

Sound 9/10 Superb music with a mix of classical and jazz and everything else . Plenty of sound effects . However, there is no digitised speech during interaction between characters .

Gameplay 7/10 Flexible controls allow lots of combos .Spells are a great addition . However there are too few moves so I find the gameplay quite boring after many hours of practice .

Replay value 8/10 Multiple endings kept me going back for more . However the endings were too short and the most of the enemies were the same . Grab five friends and have an all out brawl with the versus mode .
