Ghen War
I found this game the other day at a local computer shop for 20 dollars, and the box looked cool so I bought it. Its a 3D shooter ala Doom with one big difference... it uses Panzer Dragon/VF2 like graphics as your enemies and surroundings (polygons). I have a feeling that ID may have been looking at games like VF, Panzer and Ghen War when they were in the development stages with Quake, because this game was released last year and only recenly have there been other companys doing similar stuff with 3D shooters. So in a way I think Ghen War is a bit ahead of its time... CONTROL: 8/10 The control over your character is fine, if you choose to look up or down, left or right you are able to cover a good sized area, which is cool. Your charactor is in a Aliens like mech suit which has several weapons to choose from. You can also view yourself from outside your suit in a primitive (at todays standards) 3D view. There are decoys you can release to trick your enemy into thinking its you (ala Duke Nukes holograms), plus you can run and jump. GRAPHICS: 6/10 The graphics are not unlike the original Panzer Dragon...a little stripped down in the texture catagory but good enough for when it came out. The improvements on Panzer Dragon 2's graphics would be well welcomed in a sequal to Gen War. Some of the ships you have to destroy reminded me of a cross between the organic textures used in Panzer mixed with Decent like ships. Overall the graphics are fine, I just wish they'd released the game now because with what they've learned about 3D polygon graphics in the past year, this game would truely kik butt. OVERALL: 6/10 This would be a great game if they had added a save feature so that after you lost your first 3 guys you could pick up where you left off and not have to play the whole damn game again... that is really bad and for me brings the coolness of this game down quite a bit, but on the plus side the music is very good and ambient sounds (not unlike Quakes NIN soundtrack) are neat and adjust to whats happening on screen. If you can find the game used or at a discounted price, check it out...if not give it a rental and then decide. This game is Panzer Dragon in space without the dragon (or the track) :)
