Grandia Prologue

Review by: Ken Master

The two most often asked questions about this game are "Is it better than FF7?" and "Does it live up to the hype?" The answers to those are yes and maybe. From what I experienced in the demo disc, I must say that this is definitely no walk in the park. Topping FF7 in just about every area. Now if they can make a 30+ hour game from the basis of the demo, we'll see a game that truly lives up to the hype.

Everything from graphics to music are both breathtaking. The 3D engine must be the best on Saturn so far...until Azel and SF3 of course. Although pixelly when up close, it pushes an unbelievable amount of polygons with no pop outs at all, you can probably see half a town if you zoom out far enough. The music is just as amazing as the graphics. Skywalker Sound accomplished creating a soundtrack that is second to none, a far better job than what most people think it would be. The CG cinemas are equal to that of FF7 if not surpassing it. They are dream-like and very surreal. The guys of GunGriffon CG team definitely did an exceptional job.

The battles in this game must be the most innovative I've ever seen. Its similar to Lunar's but seem to be 10 times more advance. If Lunar is checkers then Grandia is chess. You move your character anywhere around the field. Distance plays a big factor. A time bar is represented at lower right hand corner with characters and enemies faces on. Its like a horse race, whoever reaches the line first, will be the first to make the move. Faster characters will of course be able to make a command earlier. Which is important to the strategy behind it.

The demo disc comes with a town scenario and a battle scenario (in lava land). There is a boss at the end of the battle scenario, which is not hard to beat. Also included are some cut scenes from the game and characters introduction. For those of you who were planning on buying this demo for $30 or more will feel ripped off. The final game is coming December anyway so be patient and wait awhile longer. The proposed "FF7 killer" is becoming a reality.

Overall:??? Due to it is not a full game
