Iron Storm

Review by Dave Z.

To put it bluntly, Iron Storm is the best Military Sim that has ever been developed. Of course, this only covers the ones that I have played, but I've played plenty of them. Any hard core fan of Military sims will love the strategy, stats, and gameplay opinions found in this extremely addicting game.

Iron Storm is set in World War II. The game lets you choose between using the United States, Japan, and Germany in the Campaign mode. Each country has their own strengths and weaknesses, some with better air, ground or water superiority. With each country you have a lot of units at your disposal, again with their own strengths and weaknesses. As time goes on, your units are both upgraded and new ones are created.

The graphics found in Iron Storm range from average hex based 2D to amazing 3D real time graphics. The hexagon based maps that you control the unit movements, etc., on are relatively uninspiring and probably could be done on a lesser system. Where the graphics excel, are in the battle scenes. The battle scenes are done in real time so even when you attack with similar units, you will not get scenes that are repeated too often. The graphics in the battles are just too good to describe, and pictures don't do them justice, either, you have to see them in action. With all that said, I play the game with the battle scenes turned off, and only turn them on when I want to check out new units.

Despite the power of the CD, the sound effects are not that good. The sounds of the gun fire, bombs dropping, etc. are pretty lame, but don't take anything away from the game. The music is very good, it's your typical war sim type music, but what do you expect in a war sim.

When I first learned that Iron Storm was bringing over a Strategy game, I was shocked. The best thing I had like about the past Working Designs' games were the brilliant text translations (I love the humor), and wasn't sure that they could do Iron Storm. Well, they have proved me wrong, very wrong. Iron Storm is a must buy for any fan of military sims, any fan of strategy games, and anyone who owns a Saturn. It is that good. Iron Storm is extremely detailed, and offers more play and replay value than any game that you can buy for the Saturn. By the way, you better buy the memory cart if you don't have one already.

Overall: 9/10
