FIGHTERS MEGAMiX
Review by: Martin Lo
Graphics: 16/20
+Once again there is no draw in
+Cool intro sequence
+Animation is still smooth and fast
+Textures have gotten much better but...
-The polygon count has gone down. It has that Tekken "Oragami" feel.
-Backgrounds are 2D and have actually gotten worse
-Considering the fact that Sega has had so much time to work with the
Saturn, the graphics have gotten worse by our standards
Sound effects: 9/10
+All the originals plus...
+New sounds from Virtua Fighter 3
Music: 9/10
+Original music from Virtua Cop 2, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Fighter 2,
Virtua Fighter Kids, Fighting Vipers, Daytona USA, Sonic: The Fighters,
and Virtua Fighter 3
Gameplay (36+4)/40
++Over 1,200 moves from the Virtua Fighter series, 700 from Fighting
Vipers, 200 new ones from Virtua Fighter 3, and a lot from the new
characters
+22 old characters plus 10 new ones makes a game with 32 fighters
+Very, very simple for beginners to learn with only 4 buttons
++Very easy to pull off special attacks, unlike Street Fighter II
+Choose to fight in a caged arena or an endless plane (Tekken)
+Makes more use of the third dimension than Virtua Fighter 2
+2 points for adding the escape button, which leads to side throwing
+2 points for other innovations
--The balance of strength is poor. The Fighting Vipers are much too
strong for the Virtua Fighters. Then the walls and ease of floating in
Hyper mode make it easy for them to trap the Virtua Fighters against the
wall and juggle them.
+/-The overall attacks of some of the characters are bad (only in Hyper
mode). The moves can be made too quickly. In Virtua Fighter 1, 2, and 3,
a player is punished for making a bad attack because they have brief
recovery times. This improves gameplay because pounding random buttons
is discouraged. However, this is not the case in Hyper mode. Stick with
normal speed. It'll decrease the amount of floating to a fair level.
--They should have included a ring from Virtua Fighter 2 where people
could get a Ring Out. This would have added immensely to strategy.
Replayability: 19/20
+5 levels of difficulty
++Many types of games means more depth: normal one player mode, vs.
mode, survival mode, training mode, and team battle mode.
++You always have the vs. mode to pulverize your friends!!!
+Janet is actually Aoi of Virtua Fighter 3
-No ranking mode
You can select your preferred style of fighting (FV or VF)
-There are 9 different courses of fighting. You will be rewarded with
hidden characters, who come from Sonic: The Fighters, Daytona USA,
Virtua Cop 2 and totally strange people.
-Taka is missing
Overall: 93/100
You should buy Fighters Megamix even if you have Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua
Fighter Kids, and Fighting Vipers. The preview of Virtua Fighter 3 is
worth the cash alone. Throw in 10 new characters (including Aoi) and
it's a safe bet.
