FIGHTERS MEGAMiX

Review by: Cesar Cristobal

Fighters Megamix combines characters from Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighter 2 and 10 secret characters (including ones from VF kids, Virtua Cop 2 and Daytona USA) in one game.

The graphics and animation in FM are superb. All the characters are beautifully animated, from the cute facial expressions of the VF kids to the wacky movements of the Hornet from Daytona. The backgrounds are highly varied, with variations of VF2 and FV backgrounds, and little touches like the airplane in Tokio's stage. Unfortunately, there is some slowdown on the stages with walls and the game seems to be in a lower resolution than VF2. Graphics 9/10

The sound effects in the game are decent, consisting of the typical punching, kicking and battle cry sounds in most fighting games. The stage music in FM include remixed tunes from VF2 and FV, which are passable (though you'll be too busy fighting to pay much attention to them). Sound 7.5/10

The gameplay is incredibly well balanced considering the different kinds of characters in FM. The game still incorporates the armor system in the FV characters (also used in some secret characters), but not in the VF2 characters. The VF2 characters have armor-breaking moves (press back + Z) but no armor. The Vipers have an advantage over the Virtua Fighters in FM, mainly because combos are much easier to do in FV than in VF2. Some characters are simply too powerful (Mahler and B.M.) and some have "cheap" moves (Janet fires a pistol which can dish out plenty of damage). Ring outs have been eliminated from the VF2 stages. The X, Y, and Z buttons are used for convenient button combinations such as one-button throwing. The R and L buttons act as dodge buttons, which add tremendously to the complexity of fights. Gameplay 9.5/10

FM is highly replayable. There are nine different ways to beat the game (with different rewards and endings), 32 characters to beat them with, multiple difficulty levels, a myriad of moves to master, an eight-character team mode, and three survival modes. Replay factor 9/10

I highly recommend FM to anybody interested in fighting games, since I think it is the best 3-D fighter ever made. Overall 9/10

Best VF2: Jacky
Best FV: Mahler/B.M.
Best Secret: Rent-a-Hero
Best Girl: Schoolgirl Honey
