NHL All Star Hockey 98

Review by: Jeff Adams

NHL All Star Hockey '98 is a great realistic hockey game. The key word here is realistic. You won't find yourself winning a game 12-11 like you might in NHL 98 (PC version). Let's start off with the weakest point of the game, the graphics.

The graphics in NASH are sub-par, definitely not what you would expect from the Saturn. The actual gameplay screens are rather dull and fuzzy. The animations, on the other hand, are spectacular, much better than those in nhl 98. Overall, I give the graphics a 7.5.

The control of the game is great. You have smooth, total control over your players. (NHL 98 lacks any element of control, so watch out) The speed burst is actually different for each player, for example Jagr flies past defenders while any old hatchetman ( or enforcer as some like to call them) are as slow as Christmas. Control->10

The gameplay of NASH is unbeatable. It's just fun to play.(Not frustrating as many games tend to be nowadays) This takes us back to the realism of NASH. Typically, a game might end up 2-1. Hey...realistic scoring for once! The only beef I have is about scoring methods. (It's not really a flaw, but it's unusual) Right when you're ready to shout "He's burnt like a rented goalie!" you get stoned. Other times, a feeble shot from the blue line gets past the netminder. Gameplay gets a 9.5.

The sound in NASH is kind of a letdown. The commentating is rare and late. Sometimes the whistle doesn't sound for a stoppage of play. On the other hand, the organ music is great, and it really adds to the atmosphere of the game. Sound->8.5

As I said before, NASH is just incredibly fun to play, so you better have quite a bit of free time on your hands. Replay value -> 10

OVERALL-> 9.1
