Quake

Review by: Ryan Hofmeister

First off, you probably know that Lobotomy is the group that ported over Powerslave and Duke Nukem for the Saturn. They have since ported Quake, and what a great game it is! A lot had to be toned down due to the Saturn's limited capabilities, but the game is still one of the best the Saturn has to offer in my opinion. Well let's get to the individual ratings.

Graphics 8/10
Not exactly the best the Saturn has to offer, but they are still pretty good. The game seems a little darker than Quake for the PC, and for a game like this that isn't a bad thing. The resolution had to be brought down, so it looks slightly grainier than the PC version. One thing the Saturn version has the PC didn't, other than GL Quake, was lightsourcing. Since the multi-player feature were taken out, Lobotomy worked to better the one player mode. They added lightsourcing. The enemies look pretty much like the PC's, although they aren't as sharp because of the lower resolution.

Sound 9/10
The sound is great. You get all the moans, groans, screams, and explosion sounds that you got in the PC version. You learn to love to hear the death cries of your enemies, due to how hard some of them are to kill. Just say this, the sound is very good.

Fun Factor 9/10
This game is kind of hard to put down. I found myself playing it for an hour and a half even though I was constantly being killed. There aren't that many weapons, but the ones you get are cool, especially the thunderbolt. Even though some of the levels have been shortened, they're still pretty lengthy and difficult. If you're a veteran of the PC version, you'll notice which ones have been shortened right off. If not, you won't care. The game is long enough as it is. You'll find yourself dying but coming back for more just to get revenge on that enemy. Overall, this game should bring you fun filled hours of killing pleasure.

Gameplay 8/10
The control is pretty good. The game moves fast with little to no slow down at all. There are things that can really make you mad though. The Y and Z buttons are the only things that changes weapons, so you find yourself frantically pushing one of them until you find the right weapon before you get killed. Two, sometimes you have to push X button to face up or down in order to hit an enemy. This can get annoying because while you are doing that you could take a lot of damage from the enemy trying to get a good aim on them. Aside from that, the control is pretty good and shouldn't give you much trouble.

Difficulty 8/10
This game is not for just any gamer. This game is fairly hard because of the strength of the enemies and how little life you have. This is helped though because there are a lot of med kits out there to help you out, which bring from 20%-30% of your life back. There is also special med kits that increase your life by 100%, but they deplete slowly even though you aren't taking damage. If you're lucky though, you can get the enemies to attack each other by positioning one of them in front of the others fire. It's fun to watch two enemies kill each other and make your job easier. This is not an easy task though, so if possible just try to kill them as fast as you can. Be careful about using the rocket and grenade launchers. If you're too close you get damaged pretty badly. This adds strategy to the game as you try to figure out which weapon to use and where to use it. The enemies are abundant so you have to be ready at all times.

Overall 8/10
This game is pretty good. Personally, I think it is better than both Powerslave and Duke Nukem due to the 3D character design and fun. If you love 1st person shooters or you love lots of blood and gothic style levels and enemies, this is a must have. This is just as good as the PC version. There might have been some things taken out, but the game still lives up to be the best 1st person shooter other than Quake 2 for the PC, which we probably will not see on the Saturn. This game is very fun to play and will keep you coming back for more. One of the best games the Saturn has to offer!
