Street Fighter Collection

Review by: Brian M. Briones

Ratings for Super Street Fighter 2/SSF2X:
Graphics-9.5: The graphics are pretty much dead on, arcade perfect with every detail on all of the characters and the backgrounds reproduced with awesome detail! If you wanted a perfect arcade looking Street Fighter II game, this collection will satisfy your cravings. The only drawback: the graphics are missing a few frames of animation which becomes noticeable when the turbo speed is pumped to higher levels. But still, it's great even with the small loss of animation frames! Sound-10: What can I say? This game came out back in the days before CD/Redbook quality audio was nicely possible on the console systems and now it sounds exactly like the arcade! Very nice job done here.

Controls-9: The controls are great, but not as great compared to Capcom's newest stable of fighters. One would think that Capcom would've fixed the controls and made them a bit tighter but still it's just as good as it was on the 16-bit consoles.

Challenge-9.5: The challenge is great, the computer knows how to fight well but also is very cheap when compared to the newest Capcom fighters. Examples like Guile being able to pull of instantaneous flash kicks and sonic booms without charging. Other than that, the computer does a few cheap combos which will really piss you off but most players will find ways around the computer's cheap techniques.

FunFactor-10: This game rocks just like it did back when it was released in the arcades and still is fun after a few years have passed and new generations of Street Fighter have been released.

Overall-9.2: The game is great but definitely not classic, there were a few things I felt Capcom should've fixed which would include the computer's cheat techniques and the animation frames but other than that if these problems weren't there you'd still have the same quality game it always has been.

Ratings for Street Fighter Zero 2 Dash:
Graphics-9.6: These graphics are super awesome! They're so close to the arcade and so much more crisp, and cleaner and less choppier compared the PlayStation's that it makes me cry knowing I actually picked up Street Fighter Alpha 2 on PlayStation earlier! Another notable thing about the game is that the intro is a computer generated intro programmed by Capcom themselves rather than a video clip played from a monitor like the PlayStation version.

Sound-9.2: The sounds are great but they're not crisp considering how it's being run on technology that is leaps and bounds over yesterday's technology. The voices shouldn't sound so metallic and empty but solid and clean. The nice music background is very nice though.

Control-10: Now this is how all 2D fighters should control! Nice and crisp and very responsive so that you end up blaming yourself for not pulling off a special move and not your controller. There's no excuse for not being able to do any of the special moves, especially using the Japanese Saturn pack-in controller SoA released here in the States. If you don't have one of those Sega-imported products run down to your local game store and pick up those new wider Saturn control pads. These are the same comfortable control pads packed in with the Japanese Saturns and the latest model American Saturns.

Challenge-8.3: Damn this game is hard, especially on just Arcade difficulty setting(2 stars)! After getting a little far in the game, it seems that the game goes up a notch in challenge and becomes way less weak like it was in the beginning. Instead the should've kept the challenge consistent from the start. The only real bad point of the game.

FunFactor-9.6: This game is real fun! Not only are there new modes to play, but they will keep you glued to the Saturn for a long time. Try beating Gouki(Akuma in US version) Mode with all characters, that in itself will be a real challenge if anyone out there can! Not to mention there are a few extras that make this game a great addition to the collection.

Overall-9.7: Don't have any of the Street Fighter Alpha/Zero games? Pick up the SF Collection and you'll have one. This game only goes to show that Capcom is the king of the 2D fighting genre! A must have unless you already own a copy of SF Alpha/Zero 2.

--Start Review: SSFII/SSFIIX/SFZ2-Dash--
If you've ever played any of the Street Fighter games and already traded away your Genesis and SuperNES with the Street Fighter games and you don't already have any of the Alpha/Zero games on the Saturn this collection is a must have! Here's a collection of the best Street Fighter games in the whole series bottled up into one nice package! Talk about vintage Street Fighter action, this collection is for any and all 2D fighting game fanatics, Street Fighter fans, Capcom fans, or 2D game fans. They've practically thrown everything they've got into this collection and if you need your Street Fighter II fix and don't still have your old 16-bit systems and their games, this collection will be all you need. The games come on a 2-disc set with Super Street Fighter 2, and Super Street Fighter 2 X(known as Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo in America) on the first disc featuring Chun Li against a silver background and Disc 2 features Street Fighter Zero 2 Dash(when released in the US will be known as Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold). All games in the collection play exactly the way you remember them back in the arcades or on the 16-bit consoles and boy were they fun. You'll be reminiscing about those good ol' days when you play Super Street Fighter with your friends again, reliving those days when you would all taunt each other and trash talk all afternoon long. My friends and I sure did! My only recommendation against getting this collection would be of course if you still have your 16-bit consoles with the Street Fighter II games and still enjoy playing them on those consoles, own the previous items plus a copy of SF Alpha/Zero 1 or 2, dislike 2D games period, dislike Capcom fighters, dislike 2D Capcom fighters, or dislike 2D fighters because this is exactly what you will get. Just don't expect revolutionary game play like that of Street Fighter 3, or Marvel Superheroes vs Street Fighter from Super Street Fighter because these came way before those games even were concepts. But if you love your fighters I'd say run out to your local import shop and pick this up or order online. And don't worry, if you can't read Japanese most of it is in English anyway and you already know how these games play. Nothing has changed in them at all, and if you still want to wait you're in luck because Capcom is definitely releasing the American version in late December/early January 1998.
