Sonic R

Review by: JL

Sonic R! Sega's answer to Mario Kart 64. There are 4 modes in Sonic R. The usual Grand Prix, Time Attack, Two Player, and options. Everybody supersonic racing!

Grand Prix is the usual. Let's you choose a character and course. Let's you race. To get the fifth course you have to place first in the first four tracks.

Time Attack is where it really gets good. There the usual where you race against the clock and race on the tracks reversed. The best mode in the game is Tag. It lets you choose a character and gives your opponent a couple seconds headstart and you have to run around the track tagging out the other characters. The final mode is balloon mode. I suggest you go to this mode first to learn the tracks.

The two player let's you race against a friend, but not against CPU drones. It also lets you play in balloon mode.

GRAPHICS:
The best and worst part of the game. The graphics are extraordinary. These are the best I've ever seen. True 3D characters and tracks. There are tracks above tracks. To the bad part. The graphics are handled very well by the fade in technique by TT, but the camera ruins EVERYTHING! It just crashes through solid objects, sometimes can't keep up with you. The is a lot of pop-up in this game. This occurs when you crash in the wall. Two player. Just horrible. The first time I played this mode with a friend he and I both got nauseous. You have to get very familiar with the tracks before racing in this mode. You'll won't be able to see what's in front of you until...CRASH!!!

CONTROL:
The control varies for each character. Like Sonic the fastest, but hard to control. It's very hard to go in a straight line and to brake. First it's hard to brake because there is no brake button. It's also hard to take turns. I've read from numerous reviews and it's true. Don't think they control like platform characters, but with a Sonic, Knuckles, or Tails shell. I've heard this from other reviewer that they should be put in cars and I totally agree.

MUSIC/SOUND:
The music is worse than a Hanson song! Yes, you heard me a Hanson song. The songs are super, super happy. The songs have vocals, but thank God you can shut them off in options. For some really strange reason I enjoy the intro song and the Resort Island song with vocals on (I KNOW I'm not alone). Everybody tells me I'm strange. The sound is crystal clear. From hearing Amy's car hover and hearing footsteps.

REPLAY:
With all the modes in this game it's definitely worth a rent. I don't want to make you do the wrong thing, so rent it. This game isn't for everyone. The tracks are really confusing the first few times you race on them. There are secret and multiple paths. You'll also find numerous power-ups. Like extra rings and speedy shoes. There are also springs and accelerators they take your rings as cash. Don't give up in frustration if you get lost. Race in Resort Island first. It's the easiest and go from there in order of tracks. See if you like it if you do buy it at Sears for $30.00. They're selling all Sega software for 40% off! Wal-Mart selling Saturn games as low $5.00! Resident Evil for $30.00!
