Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo

Review by: Sean Boden

There is one word to describe SPF2T: Weird. From the super-deformed-but-incredibly cute manga-based characters to the strange goodies that are gained from winning a match, or just the satisfaction of beating the stuffing out of your friend, this game is one of the most satisfying puzzle games on the market today.

Basically, SPF2T is your normal Tetris/Columns/Baku-Baku type game, but with a difference - it is probably the most rewarding game of it's genre. Every successful match is rewarded with a 'goodie' of some type, whether it be a new character, the option of listening to the game's music (Sakura sings a particularly nice song if you choose the option), or having access to some of the original drawings for the game. This makes the game much more rewarding than any other games in the same vein. What it does incorporate, which makes the experience that little bit more satisfying, is the ability to 'attack' your opponent. If you've ever played Baku-Baku, then you would know that removing a particularly large amount of blocks results in a large chunk of blocks landing in your opponents window. The same happens here, but a cool little special move is performed when this happens, making your friend's loss even more enjoyable.

But regardless of it's addictiveness, there is one major gripe I have about the game (and it's present in most PAL Saturn games by Capcom) - why are there inch thick borders in the game???!!!! I'm unsure what the NTSC version is like, but the PAL version has two ugly borders (top & bottom) that really detract from the overall beauty of the game. True, it really doesn't affect the gameplay, but by now we should have full-screen graphics on our Saturns!

For anyone who is even remotely interested in Japanese pop culture, this game will probably get you excited and hooked straight away, as it will the puzzle-gaming community. Personally, I can't get enough Japanese related stuff, so this was particularly appealing to myself. The music, graphics and gameplay are great, providing a very enjoyable experience and comes over as a highly polished and addictive puzzle game that is rare nowadays.

Graphics: 8/10
Sound: 8/10
Gameplay: 9.5/10
Longterm: 8/10
Overall: 8.5/10
