Virtua Fighter is the worlds first 3-D polygon fighting game and
now its coming home to your Saturn. As with any arcade translation, the
first question is: How does it compare to the arcade? In the case of VF,
I would have to say very well. There is obviously less polygons, thus making
the characters appear a bit more blocky, and there is polygon drop out
as well, but the gameplay remains fully intact, and the sound replicates
the arcade perfectly. When I first heard that Sega was planning on making
a polygon fighter, I asked myself, Why? I thought that it would be a downgrade
from the animated and digitized fighters that I was used to, but boy I
was wrong. What the polygons add is the most fluid movement every seen
in a fighter creating an extremely realistic looking game. As a game, Virtua
Fighter still needs some work. The characters are somewhat slow to respond
to your controls, and when you jump you basically float in the air, thus
making jumping attacks obsolete. The game does offer you a lot of moves
to your arsenal, and is the most complex fighter available. Overall, this
is a good start for the Saturn, even though it may be out dated with what
is found in the arcades, it is easily the best thing you can play at home.
Overall: 8/10
