Wipeout

Review by Dave Z

Wipeout is an Antigravity racing game that takes place in 2052 AD. You race in the F3600 Race League on tracks that stretch across terrain in every corner of the world. There are four teams and eight pilots to choose from, with each of the teams having an unique craft set to its own specifications. In addition to your racing skill, you will have various weapons and power ups at your disposal (so will your opponents). The Weapons and power ups include a shield, turbo boost, mines, shock waves, rockets, and Missiles.

Now that we have the introductions out of the way, lets get right to the big question, how does the Saturn version of Wipeout compare to the Playstation version? In the terms of graphics, I would have to say that the Saturn version is inferior, although, only slightly. The frame rate seems a bit lower on the Saturn version, the textures are a bit more grainy, and shield transparency is not as well done. On the Saturn's side, the sensation of speed seems to be a bit higher, and the control has been greatly improved. The music is the same, but the Saturn's version has two new tracks. Overall, I would have to rate the even, the Playstation gets the edge in graphics and the Saturn gets the edge in control. If you own both systems and already own the Playstation version, I would not recommend buying the Saturn version.

How does it compare to Daytona or Sega Rally? It doesn't. These are really different types of games, and depending on your own personal preferences, you'll like one over the other. Graphically, Wipeout is inferior to Sega Rally (the PS version is inferior, too) and it does not contain the fun factor of a game like Daytona. Even though many Saturn owners are very excited about this title, personally, it's old news for me. I am more interested in upcoming games like Daytona Deluxe, Manx TT, and F1 (for the PS).

Overall: 8/10
